More Exploring 2008

The background of this page is the incredible formation known as Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, California.

Chimney Bluffs State Park, Lake Bluff, New York

Paul and Dana along bluffs along Lake Ontario.

Carhenge,  Alliance, Nebraska

Nebraska's own Stonehenge.

Chimney Rock National Historic Site,  Bayard, Nebraska

A site for sore eyes to many brave pioneers was Chimney Rock.  The rock formation signaled that the terrain would be changing, but their trek was halfway accomplished.  Can you find Paul?

Scottsbluff National Monument, Gering, Nebraska

Click the Oregon Trail marker on the right to see why you should "Stay on the Trail"

Custer State Park, Custer, South Dakota

You just never know who you will run into on the Wildlife Loop at CSP.

Incredible view from atop Moonlight Ridge in the Needles at CSP in the Black Hills.

Jewel Cave National Monument, near Custer, South Dakota

We have toured many caves.  So we were looking for a different experience.  We found just that at Jewel Cave.  They offer a lantern tour.  The only lighting is from the fuel fired lanterns carried by the cave tourist.

Mount Rushmore National Monument, Keystone, South Dakota

This is one of the most crowded National Parks.  The four men inspire patriotism.

Notice the rock "garbage" at the base of the sculpture.

 Guess where it came from.

Badlands National Park, Interior, South Dakota

Undeniably one of the most incredible places to behold!  We are out on a trail admiring the colorful rock.

Devils Tower, Northeast Wyoming

Devils Tower, a premier climbing rock, is a world class destination for climbers.  So Paul had to give it a go.

Independence Rock, South Central, Wyoming

Taste a bit of pioneer history here.  As you walk around and on top of the dome you will find the signatures of brave people who crossed the Great Plains to this point where they would soon pass the Great Divide and down to their dreams in the West.

View from on top of the rock.

Mormon Handcart Historic Site with Devils Gate, Martin's Cove, Wyoming

The entrance to the park.

Devil's Gate

There are over 100 replica handcarts that visitors can pull around the cove and historic site.

City of Rocks and Castle Rock State Park, Almo, Idaho

Paul reading signatures on the rock of pioneers who traveled years ago on the California Trail.

View from the top at the City of Rocks.

Craters of the Moon, Idaho

Thousands of acres of lava make up this surreal park.

We went caving at night in the underground lava tubes.

Grand Coulee Dam, Coulee, Washington

The Apple Capital of the World-Wenatchee/Cashmere, Washington

We had a great time in one of the most beautiful places in America.  Along the Columbia River you will find Wenatchee, Cashmere, Peshastin, and Leavenworth, Washington.  This Alpine wonderland is filled with stately orchards throughout the valley.  We toured the family owned and operated Aplets and Cotlets Candy Factory in Cashmere and climbed Orchard Rock in Peshastin Pinnacles State Park near Dryden.  Of course we got of bag of the extra large, red, Fuji apples.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Las Vegas, Nevada

Cochise Stronghold, Cochise, Arizona

View from atop a mountain from the climbing anchors, which provided an inspiring view of the rugged territory where Cochise made his last brave attempt to ward off the US military.

White Sand National Monument, Alamogordo, New Mexico

This was our second visit to this sand sledders extravaganza.  Grab a sled and give it a try!
